Susan Jarnagin

“It took a while but I have finally found my dream job!”  Susan is the school counselor at Cedar Heights Elementary.  She obtained her bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University “some time ago” and completed the Master of Education in School Counseling from NWOSU in 2014.  During her required Practicum hours at Cedar Heights, Susan quickly fell in love with the school and Woodward community.  So when the school counselor position was offered shortly after it was an easy decision for her.

While she assists with many duties such as state testing, special education testing, and the English Learner (EL) program, Susan’s primary focus is to foster the educational, career and social/emotional development of students through group and individual sessions.  “My goal is to support students in reaching their full academic potential and enjoy a positive school experience. I teach students various coping strategies, skills, and methods so that they can handle challenges in different situations. I also provide referrals as necessary for more intense services at parents’ request. It’s a pleasure working with teachers, administrators, and a community who support a comprehensive developmental school counseling program.”  Susan feels very blessed in this “job” and says the best part is getting to work with every student in her building. “And who wouldn’t want at least a hundred hugs a day?!”

Previous teaching in Kansas included Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Accounting, Economics, Introduction to Business, and a number of Microsoft, Adobe and computer programming courses.  Susan also served there as district computer technician, district test coordinator, and scholarship director, as well as Student Council and junior and senior class sponsors.

Susan and her husband Kent live south of Protection (Kansas).  They have one son, Clayton, who lives nearby and is involved in the ranch and two hunting businesses.  Oldest daughter Jordan is married and lives in Olathe, KS where she is a nurse anesthetist at KU Medical Center.  She and her husband have one son, Carson, with whom Susan is completely smitten.  Lauren is a senior at the KSU School of Veterinary Medicine.  She recently married and will soon join a small animal practice in Wichita. While the drive to Woodward is an hour, Susan wouldn’t trade living in the country for anything.  She likes “messing” with their cattle and horses.  They also have one goat, numerous cats, and three dogs – one which she is particularly fond of is Cheyenne, her Mini Aussie.  Hobbies include gardening, reading, and travel but she also spends a good part of each summer at their Colorado cabin enjoying fishing, hiking, riding, and camping.
